MEDIA WATCH: Battered justice and financial systems
TOCUMEN S.A. has achieved an important goal for the country, after this week facing serious setbacks in international markets, with the cancellation of the purchase of a bond issue to finance the expansion of the international air terminal.
In these difficult times for Panama, with serious questions at the international level, we must applaud the enormous task that the management of the airport has made to regain the confidence of the international financial system.
In the interests of preserving economic stability of the airport, the institution was able to assure future investors that the presence of an economic group sanctioned by the US government does not represent a risk to the operation.
A similar position should be emulated by other government institutions. Although the situation is really worrying that the national economy would face the potential loss of jobs as a result of this crisis, the state must address other equally important aspects.
The financial system requires reforms to ensure that is not used to commit crimes. The battered justice system should serve the state, not economic groups. To not address this immediately, would have even greater consequences for the economy and national security.
