Panama sprinter misses podium by a hair
PANAMANIAN Alonso Edward didn’t win the bronze medal by the eyelash of a cat, in the final of the 200 meters of the 2015 Beijing Athletics World Championship.
On Thursday 27, at the Bird’s Nest in Beijing, Edward put all the effort he had inside but at the last moment he lacked a “hair” to the podium when in a photo finish he missed out on third by just two milliseconds, to the South African Anaso Jobodwana.
Both finished the race with a time of 19 seconds and 87 hundredths, but according to the official report of the International Athletics Federation (IAAF), the difference was in milliseconds, with two of advantage for the South African (19,861) on the Panamanian (19,863).
“I knew it was going to be a very difficult and intense run. I gave everything to take the medal, but I failed and I must move forward” said Edward
“I’ve worked hard for this and I was a thousandth away of the podium, almost nothing. The bronze went to the one that bent more. It was a bitter feeling, but I’m glad that I could represent my country well”.
The race was won by Jamaican Usain Bolt with a time of 19.55 seconds, ahead of American Justin Gatlin, silver with 19.74.
