Panama into Gold Cup semi-final
PANAMA reached the semi final of the Gold Cup on Sunday July 19 after defeating Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 with Goalkeeper Jaime Penedo the hero of the side.
The game ended in a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation and 30 minutes of extra time.
Penedo was the key, stopping two penalty kicks, the second, which sealed the win, was his finest of the match, diving to his left to deflect the shot off the crossbar.
Panama scored first at the 36th minute when Luis Tejada poked home a shot from 12 yards after it deflected off a defender.
Kenwyne Jones headed home the equalizer in the 53rd minute.
In the penalty round, Panama fell behind early when Roman Torres missed the first attempt.
Trinidad missed their second attempt pulling Panama even. The teams then stayed even until the ninth round, when Penedo made his save after Valentín Pimentel converted his opportunity.
Head coach Hernán Darío Gómez said the team was able to control possession, which was the key to the victory.
On Wednesday the Red Shirts will take on Meico at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
Mexico, defeated Costa Rica 1-0 Sunday in a shoot out after Mexico equalized from a controversial penalty kick awarded after extra time had apparently run out.
In the other semi-final, the United States will play Jamaica.
