$180 million to kick start decentralization program

PANAMA is on the cusp of a decentralization program that will see $180 million transferred to municipalities for investment in local projects.

In his last address to the country President Juan Carlos Varela said that decentralization would be a priority, and would be in force by the end of the year. He has now called for a round table discussion with municipal leaders to implement the program and stressed the importance of achieving a consensus of all political entities involved.
Minister of the Presidency Álvaro Alemán said that a meeting will be held in the future to discuss issues such as fiscal solidarity, collection of property taxes and income distribution.
National Assembly President Rubén De León requested the municipalities have projects ready to go when decentralization goes into effect.
Panama’s mayor has already announced a program of rehabilitation of potential tourist sites and the development of parks.
