Martinelli era spying hit list a “whos who of Panama
THE LIST of citizens illegally spied on by Ricardo Martinelli’s National Security Council reads like a “Who’s Who” of Panamanian society from Supreme Court judges, to the Catholic Church, previous presidents, business and trade union leaders, and even members of Martinelli’s cabinet and leaders of his own CD party.
La Prensa had access to an (incomplete) list of more than 65 people whose communications were intercepted without judicial approval and while spying on its own supporters, gave indications of paranoia.
Some names have already been identified, But the list is just beginning to unfold and Includes at least two judges of the Supreme Court, including its president, Jose Ayu Prado; leaders of the Panamenista Party, Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD), the Construction Workers Union (Suntracs), the Catholic Church and, surprisingly, Martinelli cabinet members and leaders of Democratic Change (CD) says La Prensa.
This week the Court must decide on two habeas corpus motions filed by the defendants of charges of violating privacy: former Chief of Police and the National Security Council Gustavo Pérez and ex-vice-minister and Martinelli relative Alejandro Garúz who are under arrest in La Gran Joya prison.
Supreme Court president Ayu Prado, who, is on the list , along with his colleague Victor Benavides who has already submitted criminal complaint.. It is unknown whether other judges were spied on.
The group of victims includes the then presidential candidates, Juan Carlos Navarro (PRD), and Juan Carlos Varela (Panamenista) and Genaro López (Broad Front for Democracy). And the union leader Saul Mendez.
