Embezzlement suspect and interrogation mix up
THE FORMER director of the National Assistance Program (PAN) Rafael Guardia Jaen facing charges of embezzlement and corruption arrived under heavy security at the offices of the First Anticorruption Prosecutor on Tuesday, January 20, only to be told that the appointment is for Thursday, at 9:00 am, when for further questioning.
On Thursday he will face anew prosecutor to explain “irregularities” in PAN purchases during the government of Ricardo Martinelli (2009-2014). Meanwhile, the former high living administrator is back behind bars in La Gran Joya jail a few cells away from two leading suspects in the Martinelli era wiretapping scandal. He has visibly lost weight since his arrest and then incarceration on November 20.
Guardia was executive director 2012-2014. When first charged g $18 million was found in bank accounts in Panama and overseas. Thar and several homes were seized including a million dollar mansion in a Costa del Este gated community.
The prosecutor who has taken over the case will need more luck or persuasive posers than her predecessor as so far, every time has come for questioning, the former official invokes Article 25 of the Constitution, which exempts him from testifying against himself
