MOP checking $60 million highway “overruns”

THE MINISTRY  of Public Works is investigating alleged cost overruns in the Arraiján-La Chorrera highway project that were highlighted in a report by the National Assembly Infrastructure Committee.

That report outlined $60 million in apparent excess charges that were charged to the ministry. The entire cost of the 10-kilometer project was $159.9 million reports La Prensa
Minister Ramón Arosemena said the work will be assessed “meter by meter” to determine the true cost of excavations, drainage and fillings that were done, as well as the quality of the material used.
Ulises Lay, an advisor to the Society of Engineers and Architects, said that cost overruns during the last administration were “obvious.”
