Taxi drivers protest pirates, quotas
COLON TAXI DRIVERS took to the streets on Wednesday September 10 to protest the growing number of pirates and the proliferation of permits allowed by the previous administration.
The protest started with a caravan and then a protest with banners in hands at 16 Central Street, at the entrance of the city, where they stayed for 30 minutes causing a major traffic jam, reports La Prensa.
Joseph Walter Chiari, a spokesman for the taxi drivers, said that many quotas were granted by the previous government and the streets are overrun with pirates and illegal taxis, which must be removed because it threatens their income sources. “We condemn the illegality of quotas and will no longer be silent about so much injustice and unfair competition,” he said.
Carlos Dely, regional director of the Transit Authority (ATTT) in Columbus, said about 300 quotas granted by the last government are under investigation. He urged protesting drivers to be patient.
