U.S. botanists find new plant species in Colon
A NEW PLANT species has been discovered in Donoso, Colon, by a team of American botanists. The species is of the Afelandra plant and its discovery was published last week in the New York Botanical Garden Scientific Journal.
The scientists who published the discovery are Thomas Daniel, of the California Department of Botany of the Academy of Sciences, and Gordon Mcpherson of the Missouri Botanical Garden.
The new species received the scientific name “Aphelandra merelloae.”
The plant flowers from May to January and bears fruit from July to February.
The Aphelandra is a plant that is widespread across the entire American continent and which has more than 200 species.
