Marking 160 years of China in Panama
CHINESE people have a long history in Panama and throughout Latin America. Their contribution to life on the Isthmus will be recognized next week, August 6-9, at a major cycle of conferences commemorating 160 years of the presence of China in Panama, Del Sur de China al Sur del Continente Americas.(The South of China to the South of the American Continent).
Representatives of a dozen countries will attend the event, organized by the International Society for The Studies of Chinese Overseas.
La Estrella de Panama, which was founded in Panama in 1849, and recorded many of the events and tragedies associated with Chinese workers during the building of the Panama railway (1850-55) will be closely involved in the proceedings, which will take place at the University of Panama Campus Harmodia Arias Madid in Curundu.
Sponsors include the University of Panama, The Catholic University of Santa Maria la Antigua, The Panama-China Cultural Center, The Chinese Association of Panams, The Chinese Professionals Association ,and Panama’s Association of Chinese Women Executives.
Among participating countries are Canada, Cuba, Chile, China, France, Germany, Japan, Peru , Phillipines, Spain,Taiwan, and the United States.
