Defeated CD deputy evicts 500 Chepo families

click photo to enlargeCD DEPUTY Hernan Delgado who failed to win re-election gave a final finger gesture to his constituents  on Wednesday, May 28, when riot police arrived to evict 500 families from land he owned.

The families had squatted on the land  he owned in Chepo five months ago and  claimed that Delgado had promised to legalize their possession  so they could build houses there whether or not he won the election. Instead they were faced with riot police wearing helmets body armor and face masks and carrying shields.

Wilson Chami, one of the squatters, said "Now that he lost, he decided to evict us." Delgado said that the action carried out on Wednesday was legal.

Chepo also lost most of its government sponsored "Jumbo" markets which provided  lower cost vegetables  immediately following the election.
