Varela pledges to end teachers strike

PRESIDENT-ELECT Juan Carlos Varela has pledged to end the teachers’ strike and has arranged a meeting with a transition team to address outstanding issues that have led to the work stoppage.

Education union leader Yadira Pino told Telemetro Monday, May 19, that Varela has told them the team will be appointed this week.

Meanwhile a group of teachers remain on hunger strike outside the Defensoria (Ombudsman’s office.)
She added that educators have never sought to stop classes, but that Education Minister Lucy Molinar has caused the strike due to her "inability" to handle the situation that she herself created.
The Education Ministry has said that they have complied with all the guidelines established by the Defensoria (Office of the Ombudsman), which is mediating the dispute.
