950 Ironmen in Panama for Sunday event
SOME 950 athletes will gather in Panama on Sunday February 16, to participate in the third version of the Panama Ironman 70.3.
Competitors will start with a be a 1.2 mile swim at the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal, followed by a 50-mile bike ride and a 13.1-mile run.
In 2012 the event was won by Bevan Docherty of New Zealand, with a time of 3 hours 50 minutes 13 seconds; second was now disgraced American athlete Lance Armstrong with a time of 3:50.55 and third was Australian Richie Cunningham with a time of 3:52.59.
In the 2013 competition, first place was Argentinian Oscar Galindez with a time of 3:58.51, beating Docherty (4:00.05) and Cunningham (4:03.09), who were second and third respectively.
