Student rioters get the Hollywood touch
STUDENT PROTESTORS from the National Institute were back on the streets of Casco Viejo on Sunday, October 20, carrying “Yankees Go Home” banners and demonstrating in front of a police station.
They were film extras replaying events from 1964 when students from the school spearheaded protests against the U.S. Army after dozens had been shot after raising the Panama flag over a school in the Canal Zone
The scene was a flashback to the childhood of legendary boxer Roberto Duran, for the upcoming movie Hands of Stone.
Shooting began opposite the police station of Avenue B. and lasted through most of the day. The student extras were at the location from as early as 3:00 am with the boys heading for the on set barber to get their hair restyled to the fashion of half a century ago.
Tires were burned, vehicles ,overturned and more “Yankees Go Home” banners waved alongside "A single territory , a single flag”
In the coming months the production team will be in action in many parts of the city and country. There were frequent calls for Canadian and US residents to perform as boxing fans, referees and reporters at Montreal and US fight scenes. Popping in and out will be Robert De Niro, Ana de Armas and Usher.
