OMBUDSPERON The ladys not for leaving
.PARTIDO POPULAR President Milton Henríquez is the latest political figure to call for the resignation of Panama’s ombudsperson who remains clinging to her post in the face of a public outcry.
Henriquez said Monday July 8 that Ombudsperson Patria Portugal should resign from office.
He said that this is because there is an "accumulation of signs" that the official acted improperly based on the allegations that have been brought against her.
Henriquez said that Portugal does not have the backing of public opinion and does not have the moral solvency to continue in the office.
The politician said that the ombudsperson should be an advocate for the people and have the moral authority to call attention to officials who are serving poorly. But due to the allegations of improper spending against her, Portugal can no longer perform these duties.
Two other party leaders, both presidential candidates have said she should step aside, Juan Carlos Navarro, PRD and Juan Carlos Varela, Panamenista.
Dozens of civic organizations have demanded she resign.
CD Deputy José Muñoz said that, "We are going to take this matter very seriously." Portugal is due to be questioned by the National Assembly.
Portugal is being questioned for alleged cost overruns, including paying $250,000 for the redesign of the agency's web site and $200,000 for customer service training.
