Save energy or face blackouts – Martinelli

PRESIDENT Ricardo Martinelli sent a strong message to the country on Monday, May 6  — reduce energy consumption or face power blackouts.

He puts the blame on  on the strain on the system caused by a lack of rain.

Martinelli said he does not want to institute blackouts, but that will happen unless consumption is reduced. The lack of rain has caused low levels in hydro dams, which has cut production.

He said the rainy season is expected to start within the next two weeks, so the rationing is a temporary measure.

The government has cut its office hours to save on air conditioning and lighting expenses.
