Former electoral judge to run for president as an independent

Former Electoral Tribunal (TE) magistrate Gerardo Solis is planning to run for president as an independent in in the next elections in 2014.

Solis said Wednesday, April 3. that the decision came from analyzing his position month and a half ago, after having assessed and ruled out the possibility of joining the ranks of the Popular Party.

"The important thing to know is that independent candidates can articulate together a proposal to redesign the country by people who want to run independently," he told La Prensa.com
Solis said the least concerned at this point is the collection of 1% (16,000) of the signatures that are necessary and required by the TE as a requirement for an independent candidate.
Solis announced this decision two days after the ex administrador the Panama Canal Authority, Alberto Alemán Zubieta, decided not to seek the presidential nomination for the independent route.
The former judge said: "I do believe that there is a political opportunity for independents" and he urged all candidates running independently to come together and jointly lead the country.
