Doctors call for tax jump on sodas to fight obesity
While the world, including Panama, struggles with obesity problems and the damaging effects on health services, local fast food outlets are offering free refills of sodas as part of lunch time promotions and more franchises are coming or expanding.
Meanwhile in Britain the medical community wants the government to act. They want. fizzy drinks laden with sugar to be taxed to increase their prices by at least 20%. The demand comes from, the Royal Academy of Medical Colleges in a call for action over obesity. They also want curbs on promtion by fast food outlets.
The academy, which represents most UK doctors, says obesity is becoming a huge crisis. It is also seeking a ban on any TV advertisements for junk food before the 9 pm when it is assumed fewer children are watching.
