Only 16% of the 73,292 children born in Panama in 2011 were the offspring of married parents says a report from the Comptroller General.
Most of the parents, 68.65%, were couples living together . Single mothers accounted for 15.1% (11,074) of the births while separated or widowed women, gave birth to 186 babies (.25%).
Former Superior Court for Children and and Adolescents, Troitiño Esmeralda, said tse figures reflect the individualistic culture in the country.
She said that the figures show that "neither commitment or loyalty or respect are promoted.”
