71 years bringing light into a darkened world

A large multi-denominational congregation attended the 71st candlelight celebration at Balboa Union Church (BUC) on Christmas Eve.

The custom began in 1941 when the United States first entered World War II after Pearl Harbor. At the conclusion of a service celebrating the Christmas message, the congregation carry candles down the church steps and plant them alongside the pathway to the church and around trees, following the tradition of bringing light into a darkened world.

BUC plays an active role in the community, helping

disadvantaged families with food supplies and providing

free English lessons to children. The church  is also a strong supporter of the Carols By Candlelight / Luces de Navidad Festival organized by the CanadaPLUS Club.
