Threatened crackdown on illegal ads
Panama’s Mayor, Roxana Mendez has announced a crackdown on 19,000 illegal advertising hoardings in the city bringing a potential revenue boost for the municipality.
The warning, that includes heavy fines for the illegal polluters of the city landscape is not new. During the reign of her predecessor the little missed Bosco Viallarino, there were frequent promises of action against those responsible for thousands of violations, but numerous “act now or else” warnings went unheeded and the perpetrators continued to paper the city. The latest sins detected by the Office of Outdoor Advertising. include advertisements in sizes other than those approved and companies placing the ads, not paying taxes.
The Mayor who has showed signs of being tougher than Bosco warned that violators can be punished with fines ranging from $25 to $10,000 .
