Farmers call for better prices for milk and meat

Dairy and meat producers in the  Pedasi district of Los Santos, who at times have to carry urns on their shoulders and by horseback to get the milk to collection points, are calling for a price increase.

They claim that the prices they receive are not sufficient to cover the increased costs of production.
The complaint was submitted by Euclides Vergara, who farms in  that area.

He  said that   farmers were receiving 35 cents a liter for milk which, when sold by the carton, fetches $1.25 a liter.
He added that , farmers receive between 47 and 97 cents a pound for  cattle  while consumers pay up to $2.

Producers are also calling for   road improvements in some areas   where they have to carry milk  on horseback  or on their shoulders, because cars cannot use the paths.
He said that filled milk containers have to be carried by back to the Cañas-Pedasi road  because there are sections that horses cannot cross.
