Restrictions on former president remain while money laundering case pending
Former Panamanian president Ernesto Pérez Balladares under investigation for money laundering, has been denied a a waver of restrictions on his movements.
Among the preventive measures that have been imposed on the former head of state are: an obligation to appear before the Prosecutor's Office of Organized Crime on the twice a month, and a ban on travel outside the country without court approval.
He has long been denied a visa to enter the United States.
The prosecutor handling the case, José Ayú Prado opposed the waver request.
"Once the preliminary investigation phase has culminated, the court will request the issuance of a summons for trial," said a press release issued by the Supreme Court of Justice.
Money laundering, carries a penalty of up to 12 years in prison.
