Sausage law 30 to be repealed
After months of insisting that it would not repeal Law 30, the controversial act that introduced labor and environmental reforms and was , the government has backed down and reversed its decision. Instead sections will be introduced piecemeal.
The act was known as the "Chorizo" (sausage ) law because nine different codes and laws were squeezed through under one bill dealing with air transportation, and led to demonstrations and protests across the country.
The news was announced by Deputy Minister of Labor Luis Ernesto Carles at a meeting of the commission that was created to examine the law and suggest possible reforms. President Ricardo Martinelli also confirmed the decision.
The commission had been working for three months on examining the bill, and was facing a Saturday (October 9) deadline for submitting its recommendations. But union leaders and government officials were far apart on many issues, and it was clear that those recommendations would not be ready.
Martinelli has decided to introduce six new bills to the National Assembly that will replace the Law 30 reforms. These will be an aviation, criminal code, labor, environmental, police and public law.
The labor law will include the same topics discussed by the commission.
