Former US embassy to be replaced by giant government tower

In spite of protests by architects, engineers with offers of alternative uses, another piece of Panama’s history will soon come under the wrecker’s hammer.

A soon to be gone part of Panama's past

The former US embassy on Avenida Balboa is scheduled for demolition and will be replaced by what Panama’s Ministry of Economy and Finance says will be the largest building in Latin America.
The ministry is  soliciting proposals for the design of the Torre Financiera project.
The tower is expected to be completed in 2013, which means its construction will be far faster than any of the apartment buildings, finished and unfinished, currently looming over Avenida Balboa. The reference price for the design work was set at $8 million. Bids will be accepted until October 4.
Minister of Finance Alberto Vallarino said the giant building will house several ministries and other public offices.
