Unpaid fines blitz nets transport authority $2.8 million

 The new mobile hand held computers for traffic cops could lead to a temporary loss of license, and even your car, but its reaping millions for the traffic authorities.
The monitoring device, has moved Panama into the 21st century in terms of traffic enforcement. It allows police to instantly determine if a motorist has an outstanding ticket.
In the first month of the blitz the transportation authority collected $2.8 million in unpaid fines.
It got $2.4 million in payments for traffic offenses, $180,000 in court-imposed fines and $226,000 in outstanding debts from violators
Police stopped thousands of drivers at roadblocks in June to check for unpaid tickets.
ATT Director Jorge Ricardo Fábrega said that 200 more units have been ordered. The devices will be paid for by the revenue the agency gets from the blitz.
