President should not be traveling to reunite with class mates–critic
The frequency of international trips”with unknown intentions” by President Ricardo Martinelli is under fire by the Popular Party (Partido Popular).
PP President Milton Henríquez, said on the weekend that Martinellishould submit a report on the specific achievements made every time he returns from an international mission.
He said the president’s travel must comply with public purposes and the public should be informed in advance that the president will be traveling, where he will be going, and for what specific purpose.
Speaking on RPC radio Henriques¡zsaid, upon his return, the president must submit a report of specific achievements made during his trip, in order to analyze the investment of public funds, said Henríquez..
It was not wrong that Martinelli was traveling so frequently; rather that he is doing so with "unknown intentions," .
“What is not justified is traveling [overseas] to see a baseball game or reunite with college classmates" on the public’s dime.
The policy of accountability should apply to any government official traveling outside of the country using state funds, said Henríquez. Public spending must have a positive outcome for the national economy or the safety of Panamanians.
