Panama’s Inclusion in the Android Earthquake Alerts System.

President José Raúl Mulino announced that Panama has been included in a free android tool that detects earthquakes and can warn users.  The president thanked Google for its cooperation in incorporating Panama.  This android tool can provide the population with seconds of warning before an earthquake.  “A tool that allows us to gain time in the event of an earthquake, where every second counts to protect life,” the president said. The Android Earthquake Alerts System is a global early-warning network built by Google that turns everyday Android smartphones into mini-seismometers to detect and warn people about earthquakes before severe shaking arrives. It is unknown at this point when it will be enabled in Panama.

How It Works.

Phone Sensors: Every Android phone contains a tiny accelerometer that senses movement and vibration.

Crowdsourced Detection: When a phone feels ground shaking, it sends an anonymized signal and a rough location to Google’s earthquake detection servers.  Wave Outpacing: Earthquakes emit fast, non-damaging P-waves first, followed by slower, destructive S-waves. Google uses internet speeds to transmit warnings to users ahead of the main shock.  Google Search Integration: Users can search “Earthquake near me” on Google Search to view real-time maps and information about nearby seismic activity

Three Types of Alerts.

The system sends alerts for earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater, depending on the expected intensity.

Be Aware: A simple notification for estimated light shaking.

Be Ready: A detailed alert for stronger shaking that includes an estimated magnitude and epicenter map, prompting you to prepare.

Take Action: A full-screen override alert with a loud sound for moderate to heavy shaking, giving immediate safety guidance.
