Projects with Pinogana Authorities are Being Discussed in Panama’s Darien by the British Ambassador.

The UK ambassador to Panama, Greg Houston, visited the Darien province as part of a working tour, during which he met with the mayor of Pinogana, Nadine Gonzalez pictured below.  During the meeting, Houston noted that the UK Embassy works in Panama on three main areas: economic growth, environmental protection, and the fight against organized crime, areas that it also considers relevant for Darién.  “We have come to learn about the situation in the province. I believe we can contribute to the growth of this sector of the country, starting from the three pillars mentioned, working hand in hand with local governments,” Houston said. 

González, for her part, highlighted the importance of seeking alternatives for the communities that, she explained, were left without economic activity after the wave of migration recorded in Darién.  The mayor also mentioned some planned infrastructure projects for the province, including the restructuring of the road between Pacora and Yaviza, the new hospital in Metetí, and the construction of new bridges over the Chucunaque River.  “Currently, there are high-impact projects underway, such as the restructuring of the highway from Pacora to Yaviza, the new hospital in Metetí, and the construction of new bridges over the Chucunaque River, which will contribute to the progress of the province,” González stated. 

According to the mayor pictured above, during the meeting, the ambassador raised possible projects to develop together with the local governments.  “The ambassador told us about some projects he would like to promote in conjunction with local governments for the benefit of the most vulnerable communities, and that is positive for our province,” González added.  As part of his tour, Houston also visited the community of El Real de Santa María, where he learned about some of the gastronomy and tourist offerings of this sector of the Pinogana district.
