Panama’s Puerto Armuelles Adds $10.2 Million to its Port Infrastructure.

The transformation aims to enable Puerto Armuelles to serve different commercial activities and respond to logistical needs.

The construction of the Multipurpose Dock in Puerto Armuelles, Chiriquí, has reached 72% physical progress and is entering a new planning stage that includes the redesign of the docking platform, reported the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP).  The adjustment seeks to expand the operational capacity of the infrastructure and adapt it to the needs of current maritime trade, with the aim of guaranteeing its long-term operation and consolidating the project as a multipurpose port. Those in the community may remember back to Chiquita Banana years and the dock there that fell into disrepair years after Chiquita left.

Puerto Armuelles is Moving Towards a Multipurpose Port Model.

During a discussion with local authorities and business owners in Puerto Armuelles, the administrator of the AMP, Luis Roquebert, explained that the entity requested a consultancy from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to define the development strategy for the port area.  The analysis recommended moving towards a multipurpose model based on oceanographic and tidal studies, elements that will be considered in the process of redesigning the docking platform.  The transformation aims to enable the dock to serve different commercial activities and respond to the logistical needs of the western region of the country.
