The National Migration Service reported that it detected three Venezuelan passengers in transit with 76 undeclared gold bars and without documentation to prove their origin and ownership. During the inspection of the luggage, the authorities found that the gold bars did not have the corresponding customs declaration regarding its origin and destination, valid export licenses, or documents that proved ownership of the gold, requirements established by international regulations.

According to Migration, the passengers were allegedly linked to a network of cross-border smuggling, money laundering and financing of organized crime. Given this situation, they were denied transit through Panama and were returned to their country of origin. The National Migration Service reiterated its commitment to strengthening migration control, international cooperation, and actions against organized crime, with the aim of preventing national borders from being used as channels for illicit operations.
The value of a gold bar depends entirely on its size, but a standard 1-ounce retail gold bar is worth approximately $4,355.73 USD ($6,052.86 CAD) based on the current market spot price. Because “gold bar” can refer to multiple sizes, their values range from small retail investments to massive institutional bricks.
