Tocumen in Panama May Receive a $12 Million Park for the Community
The concept is to transform two hectares into a complex with sports fields, children’s areas, rest areas and trails.
Residents of Tocumen could soon see one of the area’s abandoned lots replaced by a massive park valued at $12 million . The Municipality of Panama City hopes to launch the bidding process for the project before the end of this year. The chosen space is located in La Siesta , near Tocumen International Airport. Although it is currently used by some residents, the area appears deteriorated and offers few recreational facilities. The idea is to transform those two hectares into a complex with sports fields, children’s areas, rest areas, and pathways that facilitate access for residents of nearby communities.
The capital, according to the Mayor’s Office, coming from Property Tax (IBI) funds, will cover three years of maintenance for the 7,600 square meters of sports facilities, 3,400 square meters of children’s areas, a 600-square-meter amphitheater for cultural and community activities, and 750 square meters of administrative areas. Among the facilities are a baseball field, two multi-purpose courts, a volleyball court, batting cage, children’s play area, viewpoint, kiosks, large rest areas, parking lots and pedestrian paths surrounded by vegetation.
If the process goes smoothly, the machines would start working during 2027 and the project would be completed approximately a year and a half later. The Mayor’s office believes that the east of the capital needs more public spaces, since the growth of neighborhoods and housing developments has not been accompanied by enough parks for community life and sports. While this project takes shape, the municipality also maintains other plans to expand recreational areas in different parts of the city, including new parks in Las Garzas and several pocket parks distributed in different districts.
