Panama President Mulino Announces the Opening of a New “People’s Store” to Offer Food at a Lower Cost

This Thursday, July 23, President José Raúl Mulino reiterated his support for the “People’s Stores” of the Agricultural Marketing Institute (IMA) and announced the opening of new establishments as part of the strategy to reduce the cost of food.  The president announced that a new “People’s Store” will soon open in the province of Colón.  Mulino highlighted that the 16 stores currently operating, along with the IMA’s open-air markets, “have made it possible to bring products at more affordable prices directly from the producer to the consumer in different regions of the country.”

“The IMA and the director have my support because in those 16 stores, plus the many open-air markets, they have brought cheap food from the producer to the tables of Panamanians throughout the country,” the president stated.  Furthermore, he reiterated that the Government hopes to reach agreements with supermarkets to help reduce the cost of the basic food basket, especially given the economic difficulties faced by many Panamanian families.
