Via the Camiseta Route in Boquete, MiAmbiente Announces the Reopening of Access to the Barú Volcano in Panama

The Ministry of Environment (MiAmbiente) officially reopened the access route to the summit of the Volcán Barú National Park via the Camiseta route in Boquete. The access was temporarily blocked due to a landslide in the “La Nevera” sector, but following successful debris clearing and risk evaluations, it is now open for visitors.

Because the trail is located in a dynamic mountainous zone, MiAmbiente will maintain permanent monitoring of the area. Here is what you need to know if you are planning a trip:

  • Safety Precautions: Although transit conditions are currently safe, intense and unpredictable rainfall could still trigger new landslides or temporary restrictions.
  • Ascent Methods: The 27-kilometer round-trip route can be completed on foot or in authorized 4 × 4 off-road vehicles.
  • Summit Rewards: At 3,474 meters above sea level, it is the highest peak in Panama. On clear mornings, you can enjoy panoramic views of both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
  • Regulations: All tours require official authorization, and you should use accredited, experienced tour guides, particularly if you are attempting the strenuous pre-dawn sunrise hike.

The Ministry of Environment (MiAmbiente) announced the reopening of access to the summit of the Volcán Barú National Park, via the Camiseta route in Boquete, after completing the cleaning work and the risk assessment following the landslide in the La Nevera sector.  The organization reported that the reopening took place after confirming that the necessary safety conditions for visitors were in place. However, it noted that “the area will be under constant monitoring and weather conditions will be closely tracked.”  MiAmbiente warned that heavy rains could cause new landslides, so it recommended that visitors pay attention to safety instructions during their visit.
