Alert in the Panamanian Caribbean Due to Increased Waves and Strong Winds – Rainy Weather

Panama City, Panama: The National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) has issued a warning due to a significant increase in swells and wave periods along the entire Panamanian Caribbean coast. The warning will remain in effect until 11:59 pm on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.

According to forecasts from the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Panama (IMHPA), an increase in wave height is expected, affecting the coasts of the western, central and eastern regions of the Caribbean.  Authorities warned that the most critical conditions will occur in the western and eastern sectors, where waves could reach heights of up to 2.3 meters, with frequency periods of up to 11 seconds. This scenario represents a potential risk, so swimmers and crews of small and artisanal boats are urged to exercise extreme caution. 

Areas Under Extreme Surveillance

The official report details the areas that are under constant monitoring:

  • Western Caribbean: Northern Veraguas, Ngäbe Buglé Region and Bocas del Toro.
  • Central Caribbean: Colón Costa Abajo and the Central Region.
  • Eastern Caribbean: Guna Yala region and Colón Costa Arriba.

Given this maritime situation, Sinaproc has urged citizens to strictly follow the following safety measures:

  1. Avoid risky behaviors: Exercise extreme caution on beaches, coastal areas, and when engaging in maritime activities.
  2. Protection of vulnerable people: Maintain strict and permanent surveillance of children and vulnerable people in coastal regions.
  3. Safe navigation: Operators of artisanal and shallow-draft vessels are required to navigate with maximum caution and to use the corresponding safety equipment.
  4. Official channels: Heed the calls of the emergency services and stay informed exclusively through the official accounts of Imhpa and Sinaproc.

Weather in Panama: Downpours with electrical activity in several provinces

Weather conditions affected by the monsoon trough and downpours with electrical activity are expected in sectors of both slopes.

Panama City, Panama: The Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Panama (Imhpa) reported that for this Sunday, June 14, 2026, an unstable atmosphere is expected due to the monsoon trough over the Pacific, north of Panama and the Caribbean part of Colombia, as well as low pressure systems and tropical waves, which will generate conditions typical of the rainy season throughout the country.

On the Caribbean coast, partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected during the morning, with showers in parts of Colón, northern Veraguas, the Guna Yala and Ngäbe Buglé regions, and Bocas del Toro. Cloudy skies with intermittent light rain and thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon and evening in the same areas: Colón, northern Veraguas, Guna Yala, Ngäbe Buglé, and Bocas del Toro.

On the Pacific coast, partly cloudy skies are expected during the morning with isolated showers in parts of the Gulf of Panama, southern Veraguas, and the Azuero Peninsula. Cloudy periods with isolated downpours and thunderstorms are forecast for the afternoon and evening in parts of Central, Northern, Western, and Eastern Panama, as well as Darién; also in the Chiriquí Highlands and the Ngäbe Buglé Comarca, and along the mountain ranges of Coclé, southern Veraguas, and Azuero.

Minimum temperatures will range between 14°C and 20°C, while maximum temperatures will range from 26°C to 32°C. As for the wind, in the Caribbean, northwesterly winds are expected during the morning with speeds of 0 to 3 km/h, shifting to northwesterly winds in the afternoon and evening with speeds of 9 to 15 km/h. In the Pacific, northwesterly winds will persist in the morning at 7 to 11 km/h, shifting to southerly winds with speeds of 7 km/h in the afternoon and evening.
