According to the CCIAP the 2026 World Cup is Already Boosting Trade and Services in Panama

Panama will play its first match in the 2026 World Cup on June 17 against Ghana. The Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama highlighted that the 2026 World Cup is already generating economic activity in sectors such as commerce, gastronomy, hotels and services.

The 2026 World Cup is a major economic catalyst for Panama. Acting as a strategic aviation and transit hub, Panama is seeing significant spillover activity. The commerce, gastronomy, and hotel sectors are benefiting from tournament-bound travelers utilizing flight connections, as well as locals engaging in watch parties and regional travel packages.  The tournament’s proximity and logistical demands are creating highly specific economic momentum in Panama:

  • Aviation & Services: With Copa Airlines operating as a major connector across the Americas, the surge in travel to and from World Cup host cities—including Toronto, where Panama plays in Group L—is driving heavy passenger volume and related transit services.
  • Commerce & Retail: Panama is exporting its experience-driven commerce model. Retailers and shopping destinations are offering targeted packages that bundle flights with shopping excursions for tournament travelers.
  • Gastronomy & Hotels: Restaurants and gastro-bars are seeing a substantial boost in daily sales and event-driven foot traffic, while local hotels are capturing business from tourists on stopovers or traveling for matches.

Panama’s participation in the 2026 World Cup is beginning to have an impact on the national economy. The Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama (CCIAP) stated that, weeks before the team’s debut, various productive sectors are registering an increase in activity associated with the tournament. “The Red Tide also moves the economy,” the business association highlighted in the column “The Chamber of Commerce Speaks,” where it emphasized that the displays, promotions and special offers linked to football are a sign of the anticipation with which the private sector has prepared to take advantage of the opportunities derived from the event.
