Former mayor of Arraiján, Rollins Rodríguez, was placed under provisional arrest following a hearing this Friday. He wasn’t the only one arrested. Three other former officials implicated in the same case were also ordered to prison. The decision was made by Judge Eduardo Escobar in courtroom 10 of the Regional Judicial Unit of Panama West. The case concerned the alleged commission of aggravated embezzlement, a crime that plagues the public administration.
According to the above, the damage to the Municipality of Arraiján exceeds $815,000. The judge heard from all sides—the prosecution and the defense—but ultimately determined that the strongest measure was necessary due to the seriousness of the case, the financial damage, and the risk of the process being compromised, whether through possible flight or destruction of evidence. The case now enters a new phase. Meanwhile, the former mayor and the other defendants will face trial from behind bars.
