La Barqueta Beach in Panama Strengthens Sea Turtle Protection

As part of the sea turtle nesting season, the Ministry of Environment (MiAMBIENTE) in the Chiriquí region is intensifying its conservation efforts at the Playa La Barqueta Agrícola Wildlife Refuge through night patrols.

The agency’s technical team has been able to closely observe the nesting process of adult sea turtles.

These actions will allow for the collection of key scientific data for the conservation project.

It also highlights the measurement of the width and length of the mother turtles’ carapace, vital information for understanding the status and characteristics of the species that arrive on the beach.

Likewise, the nests are being geo-referenced, allowing them to be later relocated to the refuge’s nursery. This practice significantly improves the hatchlings’ chances of survival.
