Culture for all, including the odd vulture

Shortly before he died the famed Welsh poet and carouser, Dylan Tomas, took a rise out of his adoring American audience during a lecture tour, by referring to “culture hunting vultures.”
Many among his listeners nodded knowingly, but unknowingly didn’t realize he was talking of the very people who had paid to hear him. The talk was recorded by Caedmon records, and if it’s still about, is well worth listening to.
All of which came to mind when reviewing the culture feast that lies before Panama residents in the upcoming seven days, and there won’t be a Welsh bard in his cups ready to deride those who take up the offers. There may be the odd vulture in each audience, but most people will be like you: there for pleasure, not just to be seen.
Whether your tastes run to Opera, piano recitals, theatre or art, or a combination of some of the above, there is something for you, and if you are a member of the CanadaPLUS Club, some of the offerings will even come at a discount.
On Tuesday, May 10 you at the Teatro Nacional in Casco Viejo you will have the opportunity to rekindle old passions, operatic or personal, with an evening of love songs from the opera. Opera Panama’s own talented performers will be joined by guest star soprano Laura Pedersen from New York. The selection arias and from La Traviata, Carmen, and other favorite presentations starts at 8 p.m, and will be repeated on Thursday May 12, same time, same place.
Tickets range up to $45, and if you are a CanadaPLUS member, and pick up your tickets at any Power Point location in Panama, and show your membership card, you will get a 20% discount on $35 and $45 tickets. That’s quite the deal. Tickets are also available at Arrocha, but the discount won’t work there.

On Wednesday, lovers of fashion Chopin and Lizt will be entertained with a fashion parade presented by respected French couturier Hélène Breebaart, who lives in Panama, and a piano recital by internationally famed Canadian pianist Alexander Panizza who is making a return visit to Panama The event is a fund raiser and tickets at $45, are available at $40 for CanadaPLUS members. It takes place at trhe Huaca Theatre at ATLAPA at 7.30.p.m.

For theatre lovers, the delayed opening of the two play bill presented by the Ancon Theatre Guild, will be on Thursday May 12 and will run through the rest of the week at 8p.m.and again on May 18-19-20
