OPINION: Government blind to jobless suffering

While the private sector is doing what it can to stimulate the economy – weakened by the pandemic – the government is doing the opposite. At the National Customs Authority, officials went on strike, causing tens of millions of dollars to be untradeable. The complainants claimed $ 3.2 million in work incentives, corresponding to this year, while the daily losses caused were eight times that amount. The absurdity is that this strike could be prevented – by both parties – before reaching extremes. This lack of empathy is frankly regrettable, because, while these officials enjoy the privilege of having a job, in the private sector – in just one year – some 290,000 jobs have been lost, that is, more than 40% of formal jobs.  In government, the sacrifice quota has been nil and, in fact, its payroll increased by more than 30 thousand new jobs. It is very clear that the government leadership and its officials behave unscrupulously, to the point of being oblivious to the suffering of thousands of households that will hardly have the consolation of having a job by the end of the year – LA PRENSA, Nov. 27.
