Martinelli denies constitution reforms tied to political ambitions
President Ricardo Martinelli has denied that his proposed public forums on constitutional reforms are prompted by plans to seek re-election.
La Prensa quoted Martinelli: "I am not interested in running for another consecutive term," Martinelli said. "I definitely don’t want an immediate re-election."
Critics said that Martinelli was hoping to change the part of the constitution that prevents presidents from serving two consecutive terms.
But Martinelli said his proposal has nothing to do with his political ambitions, but rather an interest in expanding the country’s democracy.
Martinelli said the reforms would focus on issues such as the appointment of Supreme Court judges, campaign spending and tax reforms.
