Investigation of another former president underway
Former president Ernesto Perez Balladares, under investigation of money laundering, is expected back in Panama today (April 15), after a four day jaunt to Peru, only days after being released from house arrest.
Manwhile anti-corruption prosecutor, Yolanda Austin, is on the trail of another former president, Mireya Moscoso, for the alleged improper use of $ 45 million donated by the Government of Taiwan to Panama.
The Public Prosecutor’s investigations opened, after the former president lost the immunity she enjoyed as a member of the Central American Parliament.
The funds donated by Taiwan were handled by South Sea, a private interest foundation composed of relatives and government officials of Moscoso.
The money was to build a maternal and child hospital in Chiriqui and equip several rooms in the St. Thomas Hospital and the National Cancer Institute.
The former president of Taiwan has been jailed for corruption.
