Corozal Cemetery site of Memorial Day tribute
US Memorial Day will be marked at Panama’s historic Corozal cemetery on May 31, 9:00 a.m.
The Corozal American Cemetery bears the remains of soldiers who fought in the Civil War, the Spanish American war, both World Wars, and the Korean war in addition to those who served in recent conflicts
It contains more than 5300 graves somedating back to 1790. The Cemetery is one of 24 American Military Cemeteries located in foreign countries operated by ABMC (American Battle Monuments Commission).
Although the Cemetery was originally only two acres of land, as established by the Isthmian Canal Commission in 1940, it eventually grew to 60 acres during the times it was operated by the Grounds Maintenance Division of the Panama Canal Company. On June 5 the year 1982 the Cemetery was officially signed over to the ABMC by the US Army.
