Bocas del Toro – Active Agers and Intentional Living

Active Agers and Intentional Living: Exploring New Lifestyle Choices in Panama.

 Introduction:

One of my clients, considering retirement in Panama, recently shared a concern with me. “My kids also want to come. Are there affordable living options for them to work and play while I relax?” And this isn’t an isolated case. Another client, excited by the prospect of working remotely, is drawn to the allure of Bocas del Toro.  “What about accommodations for elderly parents or grandparents?”  The desire to have parents enjoy their later years in the serene beauty of Panama is a common thread among my clients.

Facing the Challenge:

In Panama City, there are several facilities available, but options are scarce in rural areas. As our parent’s age, their care and attention often increases, sometimes becoming a challenge for families. The high cost of assisted living in countries like the U.S. can be prohibitive.  Thankfully, more affordable options are emerging in Panama, offering quality care at a fraction of the cost.

Family-Centered Approach:

Panama’s strong family-centered culture is one of its most endearing qualities. This aligns well with the values of many Americans, Canadians, Europeans, and others who prioritize family, especially when considering care for elderly members.

Available Options:

A notable facility in Panama City is Residential Casa Blanca Home Care Adulto Mayor, offering long-term or temporary residency programs with personalized care.  Insignia Panama, an American company with a branch in Panama, provides spacious semi-private rooms, dining services, a salon, gym, and more.  In Boquete, the upcoming Golden Years facility will offer 32 beds with inclusive programs for residents.

In-Home Care Solutions:

According to an online service, another viable option is hiring a nurse for at-home elderly care. A nurse in Panama charges around US$80 for an eight-hour shift. A trained helper costs between US$50 to US$70 for the same duration. Both options require covering food and transportation expenses. Live-in nurses can cost between US$1,200 to US$2,000 monthly, including meals and a day off per week.
