“After considerable deliberation and reflection, I have decided not to pursue the presidency,” he said in a statement.
But with the hubris that defines the man he said: “I maintain the strong conviction that if I were to run, I would be able to win the primary and ultimately, the general election.”
He had in fact slipped dwn the polls as a possible candidate but covered his tracks: “Ultimately, however, business is my greatest passion, and I am not ready to leave the private sector.”
Trump announced his decision in at an event where broadcast networks preview their fall lineups.
When he made the announcement, the advertisers cheered said the New York Times
His short lived appearance on the burst on the political scene came in the spring when he grabbed media attention by creating doubts that President Barack Obama had been born in the United States. After Obama had publicly produce his birth certificate, showing that he was born in Hawaii, Trump claimed that he had forced the president’s hand.
Obama turned the tables in a mocking aside durng an address at a media dinner in Washington. Trump, stony faced, was in the audience, and did not join in the laughter of his neighbors.
