WikiLEAKS: New Immigration boss linked to wiretapping

When, President Ricardo Martinelli was allegedly pressuring the U.S. Drug enforcement Agency DEA to keep tabs on his political enemies Panama’s new Director of Immigration, was busy trying to infiltrate the DEA  wiretapping program according to WikiLeak revelations

Carrillo, in a cable from the  U.S. Embassy to Washington, tried to have one of his officers assigned to the team that was conducting the wiretaps for the DEA despite not having been properly cleared.

According to the diplomatic cable says La Prensa, Carillo, who was then head of the police investigative unit DIJ, called the head of the wiretapping program, codenamed Matador, to have a new member assigned to the team. Carillo assured the official that the new officer had gone through security clearance procedures, when in fact he had not.

Former Amabassador Barbara Stephenson sent the cable on Oct. 19, 2009, to the Department of State, reporting on the efforts of Carrillo to infiltrate the Matador program. The cable was sent around the same time that the Embassy removed control of the matador program from security officials and placed it under the control of Attorney General Ana Matilde Gómez.

Gómez was later be removed and charged because she allegedly illegally recorded phone calls several years prior during an investigation into alleged corruption by a prosecutor.

On Wednesday, June15, Carrillo denied making any request to place someone on the Matador team.

"If my name is mentioned, it is either a mistake or something that is not true."
