Civil groups demand resignation of Supreme Court judges

Civil society groups and members of the newly formed Front for Democracy rallied outside the Supreme Court  on Tuesday July 3 to demand the resignation of the court’s president  and vice president.

Demonstrators  protested for an  hour against  Chief Justice  Alejandro Moncada Luna, and Vice President Harry Diaz, both of whom were personally selected by President Ricardo Martinelli, who overrode  a committee appointed to choose new judges from a long list of applicants.

Law professor Miguel Antonio Bernal, a member of the Citizens' Assembly, said Moncada Luna and Diaz did not act independently and responded to commands from the Executive.
