PRD surges back to biggest party as nearly 50,000 enroll

Nearly 50,000 people enrolled in the Democratic Revolutionary Party(PRD) on Sunday, November 11, making it once again the country’s biggest political group.

Juan Carlos Navarro during the registration driveThe party's general secretary, Juan Carlos Navarro, released the figures (49,916) at a press conference
A jubilant Navarro, former two term mayor of Panama and presidential aspirant, said that becoming the largest political group in the country, and beating the ruling Democratic Change (CD) in the national registration shows that the Panamanian people are with the PRD to win the 2014 elections.
"The Panamanian people have demonstrated that they want unity, no more conflict, no more enforcement, not more ‘Colon’ events,” said Navarro.
“The Panamanian people demonstrated today that they believe in a new Panama.”
The registration took place in 414 districts across the country. The figures have yet to be made official by the Electoral Tribunal, (TE) after a cleaning process.
The Tribunal had estimated that the PRD needed 10,000 votes to ease past the CD.
Earlier in the day, Navarro told La Prensa: "We are proud because we enable registration tables in 414 districts of the country are now open …Our purpose today is to open the books of the PRD. Everyone who wants to join voluntarily to strengthen democracy and freedom can do it," he said.
It was his first major leadership test, after becoming leader of the group in late August.
