PRD leaders unconvinced Navarro is man for the job
ALTHOUGH Juan Carlos Navarro won a resounding victory on Sunday in the presidential primaries of the Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD), some of the party's senior leaders remain unconvinced that he is right for the job.
In his speech, Navarro, a former mayor of Panama, spoke of changes, a better Panama, an autonomous, independent justice system with transparency and a recognition of errors the party has committed.
However, says La Prensa such promises have not convinced PRD leaders Mitchell Doens and Francisco Sánchez Cardenas.
Both politicians said they are hoping that Navarro's words are not left on paper, as was the case with the promises of the current President, Ricardo Martinelli. They said that if indeed there is a commitment of the candidate to make profound changes to the country, beginning with the Constitution, they will be willing to support the proposals.
"If he fulfills his promises, such as a constitutional change to combat corruption, I will be there, but if not I will keep quiet," said Sánchez Cardenas.
Doens said: "I support Juan Carlos Navarro on the basis that he offers real changes that others do not."
Both Sánchez Cardenas and Doens were absent at the Navarro celebrations held at the El Panama hotel. There were only a handful of leaders of the party present at the event.
