A rose by any other name Council becomes Authority
PANAMA’S National Assembly approved the creation of the National Authority of Transparency on second debate Friday, April 19.
The new agency will replace the National Council of Transparency against Corruption, currently directed by Abigaíl Benzadón.
There were 37 votes in favor and four against.
The project was introduced to the legislature by Minister of the Presidency Roberto Henrí¬quez, who said at the time that it was requested by international agencies.
The director of the new agency will serve seven years and receive the same salary as a state minister.
The director also has the power to fine offenders who work for the government up to 50 percent of their salary.
